What future for Europe wine and vineyards?
About Mondovino movie of Jonathan Nossiter

What has the future in store for European vineyards ?

Mondovino is a good film in that it leaves the viewer with a very strong sensation. The juxtaposition of the two worlds, the two schools of thought is spectacular, if a bit of a caricature, but that is not the crux of the film.

I have enormous confidence in the European vineyards' ability to survive this time of crisis and doubt. The deeply-rooted experience with vines and wine, the diversity and the quality of the terroirs, and the richness of the indigenous varietals are all assets inherent to the European vineyards. Of course, the arrival of wines from America and the new world, which play the marketing card, draw a whole new map of the marketplace. The amounts they produce flood the market and also stimulate demand. These wines compete directly with inexpensive wines without a local identity. Yet, I have observed that the annual amounts sold by the vintners producing quality wines have remained stable. A sure sign that the crisis has not affected good wines.

On a parallel, I would bet on the incredible progress consumers have been making in the past couple of years. Consumers are not sheep, who just look at scores, unaware of the debate going on and deprived of all capacity to taste and reach their own personal opinion. Consumers seek to acquire true knowledge about wine, even if the subject is complex. Proof of this can be seen in their interest and great awareness of highly complex high-tech products. Wine can be similar, and here too, complexity does not stop the consumer, on the contrary it sharpens their curiosity. Today, and more so tomorrow, knowledge of a complex subject will be a distinctive, and a distinguishing factor. I run into great curiosity from the consumer every day.

Furthermore, in my opinion, these two worlds can live together. And I think we can draw a lesson from the American qualities of dynamism, energy, belief in enterprise and wide open vision. Here too, open-mindedness and interest in the other can only be factors of progress.
